  • RC Speakers Weigh In on the Iran Election

As the political tumult continues to make headlines, Royce Carlton speakers bring in their thoughts and perspectives on the Iran election.

Fareed Zakaria dedicated the bulk of his Sunday morning talk show, Fareed Zakaria GPS, to the Iranian election and its aftermath, opening with his frank assessment -- "My own sense is that the vote appears to have been rigged." While some assessed the mainstream media failed to provide comprehensive coverage of the election, Zakaria’s depth and unconventionality was lauded by the Huffington Post.

Thomas Friedman explores how much has changed through his coverage of the Middle East in the last twenty years in his New York Times Op-Ed column, “Winds of Change?” While forces against change in Iran are extremely powerful, the proponents of democracy and pluralism are gaining increased momentum and greater power to push back.

Joe Klein witnessed the developments in Iran firsthand, as seen in his TIME magazine article "10 Days in Tehran, What I Saw At the Iranian Revolution"  and in his TIME.com video. Last week, Klein spoke to Iran’s leading reform candidate, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, in his TIME interview, “The Man Who Could Beat Ahmadinejad.” Mousavi answers questions regarding the way Ahmadinejad conducted his campaign, Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy, President Obama’s efforts to improve relations with Iran, and the modern changes that are beginning to take place.

Beginning on the morning of Friday’s election, Andrew Sullivan has been providing some of the most thorough coverage (in both online and offline media) of Iran’s political developments on his blog, The Daily Dish. His minute-to-minute updates are offering firsthand accounts of Tehran’s events, including Twitter updates, videos of the protests, and a message from Mousavi about the results.

In his New York Times Week in Review piece, “Understanding Iran – Repression 101,” David Sanger explains the complexity of Iran’s political system, comparing and contrasting it with past revolutionary models throughout history.  In another recent New York Times article, he discusses President Obama’s continued engagement with Iran despite the crisis.

In his Daily Beast article, “How Iran's Hackers Killed Big Brother,” Douglas Rushkoff discusses how the Iran election has spurred a Twitter-fueled revolution. While Iran’s telecommunication networks have been unplugged, through bandwidth and server hacking, Iranians are posting tens of thousands of messages per minute challenging the regime’s power over the election – a victorious effort in itself.
