Admiral William Fallon

Four-star Admiral “Fox” Fallon, who recently retired after a distinguished 40-year career of military and strategic leadership, is widely known for speaking truth to power and his strong advocacy of diplomatic and economic engagement as the preferred approach to resolving international disputes.

Called “one of the best strategic thinkers in uniform today” by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Admiral Fallon has led U.S. and Allied forces in eight separate commands and played a leadership role in military and diplomatic matter at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

As commander of U.S. Central Command, he led U.S. military forces in the Middle East during the critical turnaround of the situation on the ground in Iraq in 2007-08. A firm believer in a strong military as an essential prerequisite of stability and security, he also promoted conversation between governments and people of many nations during his years in command of forces in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.

Admiral Fallon is no stranger to controversy; during his tenure as Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, he raised the ire of Washington’s “China hawks” with his advocacy of stronger military-to-military relations with the People’s Republic of China. A profile in Esquire Magazine, which depicted him supporting a balanced approach to Iran in opposition to Bush Administrative policies, resulted in widespread controversy leading to the Admiral’s resignation.

Admiral Fallon is a graduate of Villanova University, the U.S. Naval War College, the National War College and holds an MA in International Studies from Old Dominion University. Sharing his experience and views on security and foreign policy matters, he has contributed to the opinion pages of The New York Times, journals, and publications worldwide, and has been featured on international television news and commentary programs.
