Barry Scheck
Attorney and DNA expert Barry Scheck is known for his years of landmark litigation, which set standards for the use of DNA evidence in courts throughout the country. He has spearheaded a nationwide movement to re-examine the fairness and efficacy of our criminal justice system.

Scheck co-founded The Innocence Project in 1992. This national litigation and public policy organization is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system to prevent injustice. It has used DNA evidence to exonerate more than 200 wrongfully imprisoned people, some of whom were on death row or had been incarcerated for decades.

In Actual Innocence: Five Days to Execution and Other Dispatches from the Wrongly Convicted, Scheck exposed the mishandled evidence and coercive interrogations that plague the legal process. Publisher’s Weekly called the book “an alarming wake-up call.”

A DNA expert on the O.J. Simpson defense team, he has served as Counsel in such other high-profile cases as the Louise Woodward “Nanny Murder” case and the Abner Louima sexual assault case. He has covered the Oklahoma City bombing and other trials for NBC News. A commissioner of forensic science for New York and a Professor at the Cardozo School of Law, he has been awarded one of the legal professions highest honors, Most Outstanding Criminal Defense Lawyer in America.
