The winner of more Tony Awards than anyone in history, Hal Prince has directed and/or produced over 50 musicals, plays and operas, beginning with The Pajama Game in 1954, and including Damn Yankees; West Side Story; Fiorello!; Take Her, She's Mine; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; She Loves Me; Fiddler on the Roof; Cabaret; Zorba; Company; Follies; A Little Night Music; The Visit; The Great God Brown; Love for Love; Candide; Pacific Overtures; On the Twentieth Century; Sweeney Todd; Evita; Merrily We Roll Along; A Doll's Life; Grind; and Roza.
At the 60th annual Tony Awards in June of 2006, Prince received his 21st Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
His work is represented by numerous productions of The Phantom of the Opera, including on Broadway and in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, London, Toronto, Melbourne, Tokyo, Vienna, Stockholm, Hamburg and, beginning in 2006, in Las Vegas.
He directed Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West starring Placido Domingo for Chicago and Los Angeles, Madame Butterfly for the Chicago Lyric Opera, and other productions for the Metropolitan Opera, the Houston Grand Opera and The New York City Opera, and the Vienna Staatsoper. Prince has directed many plays, including The Visit, The Great God Brown, End of the World, and his own play, Grandchild of Kings. He also directed the Broadway hit musicals, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Candide, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Damn Yankees and Parade.
A trustee for the New York Public Library and a member of the National Council for the Arts for six years, Prince has also served as President of the League of New York Theaters and was a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree.
He currently is working on two shows, including LoveMusik, which is about the love affair and marriage of composer Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya.
