Educational History:

Public schools in Philadelphia. Received A.B. degree from Central High School of Philadelphia, June, 1959.

International School of America, 1959-60. (A 9-month around-the-world study trip; full scholarship from the American Association for the United Nations.)

Harvard College, 1960-64. Received A. B. degree cum laude in biology, June 1964. (Special work on the ethnobotany of medicinal and psychoactive plants; undergraduate thesis on “Nutmeg as a Narcotic.")

Harvard Medical School, 1964-68. Received M. D. degree June, 1968. (Senior elective work devoted to designing and conducting the first controlled human experiments with marijuana.)

Professional and Occupational History:

1996 to present: Director, Program in Integrative Medicine, University of Arizona. (Training physicians to combine conventional and alternative medicine.)

1983 to present: General practitioner of natural and preventive medicine in Tucson, Arizona.

1975 to present: self-employed as writer, lecturer, and consultant on medical education, medicinal plants, natural and preventive medicine, alternative medicine, mind/body interactions, addictions, drug abuse, and drug policy.

1993 to 2000: Founder of Foundation for Integrative Medicine of Tucson, Arizona, a non-profit, educational and scientific corporation dedicated to the thoughtful integration of ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine.

1985 to 2000: Wellness counselor, Canyon Ranch Spa, Tucson, Arizona. (Counseling clients and staff about preventive and alternative medicine, lifestyle change, and addictive behavior.)

1979 to 1997: President of Beneficial Plant Research Institute of Sausalito, California, a non-profit, educational and scientific corporation dedicated to investigating and promoting the use of plants to improve human life, with special emphasis on new foods and spices, medicinal plants, and natural dyes, fibers and pesticides.

1979 to 2003: Senior Faculty Member, Telluride Mushroom Conference, held each August in Telluride, Colorado for identification and study of edible, poisonous, psychoactive, and medicinal mushrooms. Co-leader of conference-sponsored mushroom study-tours of the People's Republic of China (1983), Japan (1984), India and Nepal (1985).

1971-1984: Research Associate in Ethnopharmacology, Botanical Museum of Harvard University. (Investigating medicinal plants.)

1971-75: traveled widely in North America, South America, and Africa as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs to study indigenous medicine, psychoactive plants and altered states of consciousness. Wrote 39 newsletters on these themes, most of which have since appeared in book form.

1970-71: wrote a book, The Natural Mind, published in 1972.

1969-70: worked one year in the U.S. Public Health Service, stationed at the National Institute of Mental Health in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Resigned post and commission in July, 1970 in order to write and pursue research interests.

1968-69: completed a medical internship at Mount Zion Hospital and Medical Center, San Francisco. Also worked as a volunteer physician at the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic in the same city.

Currently licensed to practice general medicine in Arizona, California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, and Virginia.

Member, Harvard-Radcliffe chapter of Sigma Xi.

Fellow, Linnean Society of London.
